The
goal of the Above the Notch Humane Society is to find the best
match between a pet and a permanent home. The ATNHS will only
approve the adoption of a pet if its needs can be met by the
prospective owner.
Before
meeting our homeless pets, we require that an adoption
application be filled out and approved. A volunteer will contact you.
The
animals are shown to approved adopters by appointment.
We realize that this policy is different from that of many other
shelters. However, our animals are currently sheltered in a kennel and in foster homes who do not have the time or personnel to
show the animals upon demand.
After an adoption has been approved, we allow the new owner to
take the pet home for a week as a “try out”. We
understand that it is hard to know how a pet will fit into the
household just from seeing it at the shelter. If the pet
does not work out, it may be returned within a week and the
adoption fee will be refunded. After a week, the adoption
fee will not be refunded. We will exchange one pet for a
different one as another option.
The animals that come to the Above the Notch Humane Society are
often strays or animals surrendered by owners who can no longer
keep them for a variety of reasons. Some are brought in by
animal control officers or are referred to the shelter due to
abuse or neglect. Some animals are homeless due to the death
of their owner.
