Surrender a Pet

If you can no longer keep your dog, please DO NOT abandon the animal. Consider placing the dog in the home of a family member or friend, and make sure the relative or friend is prepared to accept a new pet and understands the responsibilities. Another option to consider is whether working with a trainer can change the situation and allow you to keep the dog. Above the Notch Humane Society works with certified trainers and would be happy to suggest trainers who are qualified to work with you and your dog. In addition, if you are able to keep the dog until a new home is found we are happy to assist in finding a new home by advertising the dog on our website and Petfinder.

If all other options have been pursued, please call Above the Notch Humane Society to discuss surrendering a dog. We will need information about the dog’s personality and health, and in many cases may ask to meet the dog prior to accepting it. It is very important to be honest and disclose all information about the dog, including bite history, aggression, life history, and medical condition. We will ask for vet references, vet records, and in some cases ask that medical issues be addressed before accepting the dog. Above the Notch Humane Society evaluates each situation closely, and works hard to do what is best for everyone involved.
